Mollom: Anti-Spam Plugin

It seems like a lot of people are getting into the anti-spam business recently. Mollom has released a publicly available version of its WordPress plugin.

Unlike the others such as Akismet, TypePad AntiSpam, and Defensio, Mollom alters the comments database table to add a field. I don’t usually think that’s a good idea, but other, popular plugins do it.

Curiously, none of TypePad, Defensio, or Mollom uses text localization, so they must not be planning to offer versions in languages other than English.

Mollom works on non-English websites. Also, the WordPress plugin for Mollom is developed by Matthias, a community contributor — it is not written by the Mollom team. We’re working with Matthias though.

Dries, thanks for the clarifications. I’m sure the plugin will work on non-English websites, but it doesn’t use the WordPress gettext localization, which would make translating the plugin very simple.

You’re totally right. My primary concern was to get the plugin just working and clearing out most bugs. I know there are some compatibility issues with other plugins like WP OpenID which need to be solved. Support for gettext localization is planned, but wasn’t a priority during development.

Indeed, I’ve been working with Dries to create the plugin and continue to do so.
