Could it be that the drop is caused by sloppy maintenance of the various sites ? For instance http://www.vgb.no, the blog hosted by one of Norway’s biggest newspapers, where random hacks are introduced, untested, and all code maintenance is done directly on the running live version ?

Do you think it’s possible that microblogging, Twitter and such, has become popular because people are far too lazy to even write a full blog posts these days, and this might have something to do with the drop in traditional bloggers?

But as someone commented on your blog post, it’s the long tail that really counts, and there WordPress will continue to dominate for the foreseeable future.
